The difference between Level 2 and Level 5 autonomous driving isn’t technological, it’s liability. At what point is a carmaker willing to accept responsibility for the death of innocent people in a lawsuit?
Right now in the US, drivers are required to have no-fault insurance that recognizes that accidents happen. Even if a self-driving system were 100x safer than a human driver, it would still be liable for many deaths which would end up in court. Worse, when an AI fails, it tends to do so in a way which humans find baffling, making the responsible party look incompetent.
